About
A search engine you control. Still the idea.
Aquila is back — not the old code, the original idea, done right for 2026.
Where Aquila started
Aquila began in 2021 as an open, decentralized neural search engine — a web-native search engine that you control. It was a bet that search shouldn’t belong to a handful of gatekeepers running ad auctions over your attention. Search should answer to the person who runs it.
The decentralized part was too early. The infrastructure wasn’t there, the models weren’t there, and the world hadn’t yet felt the cost of handing every query to someone else’s black box. So the original project went quiet.
Why now
The core idea — search you own — is exactly what developers need today. Semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation, and vector databases have made high-quality search something any team can build. But the default path funnels your data, your embeddings, and your index into third-party services with metered bills and opaque terms.
You don’t have to accept that. You can self-host the whole stack — the embeddings, the vector store, the retrieval, the answer engine — on infrastructure you control. That’s not a compromise anymore. In 2026 it’s often faster, cheaper, and more private than renting it.
What Aquila is now
Aquila Network is the independent home for private, self-hosted AI search. We’re reviving the brand and the vision — not the 2021 code — as a vendor-neutral guide and community for building search you own: semantic and neural search, RAG, and the vector databases that power them.
No gatekeepers. No ad auctions. Your data, your index, your search.
What we stand for
Search you own, not rent
The whole point. Your embeddings, your index, your data — running on infrastructure you control.
Vendor-neutral, open-source-first
We have no ad incentives and no tool to sell you. We compare honestly and favor what you can run yourself.
Technically credible, no fluff
Written for developers and technical teams. Real commands, real trade-offs, real costs.
Own your search.
